The IEEE Control Systems Society is pleased to publish this DVD archive of articles that appeared in the Transactions on Automatic Control, the Transactions on Control Systems Technology, and the Control Systems Magazine from the inception of those journals through 2001. The Transactions on Automatic Control first appeared in May, 1956, as the IRE Transactions on Automatic Control. In 1963 the title changed to IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control with the publication of Volume 8. The Transactions on Automatic Control remains the premier journal in the world for papers on all aspects of control theory. In March, 1981 the Control Systems Magazine was launched to publish articles of general interest to members of the Control Systems Society as well as news items, interviews, and other services. The Transactions on Control Systems Technology was established in 1993 to provide a vehicle for the publication of more application oriented articles to address the theory-practice gap between control theory and its applications.
This collection is a fascinating and extraordinary archive of the evolution of the field of automatic control over the past forty-five years and a valuable resource for students, practitioners, researchers, and historians of control. On behalf of the IEEE Control Systems Society I would like to thank the many volunteers who worked diligently to bring this project to fruition. In particular, Bruce Krogh and Tamer Basar began the project during their terms as Vice President for Publication Activities and President, respectively. The project was continued by the subsequent Vice President for Publication Activities, Mark W. Spong, and President, Wilson J. Rugh. I would also like to thank Pradeep Misra for his help in the cover design of the DVD set.
I would like to thank the following individuals and organizations for contributing their copies of pre-1988 issues of the periodicals that were scanned to produce the digital format incorporated on these disks: The Polytechnic University, Brooklyn; Joe H. Chow, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; Miroslav Krstic, University of California at San Diego; and Tamer Basar and Mark W. Spong, The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Finally, I would like to acknowledge the excellent assistance of Mohan Paturi of Parity Computing in creating this archive. I am sure that you will find this archive an invaluable resource.
Information about journals, conferences, technical committees and member activities of the IEEE Control Systems Society can be found at its web site: http://www.ieeecss.org. In particular, you can learn there about how to get on-line access to conference papers and to articles in more recent issues of the journals that are archived on this set of DVDs. That site also indicates how you can provide feedback to the Society, such as comments on this compact collection of articles from our journals.
