The 51st IEEE Conference on Decision and Control will be held Monday through
Thursday, December 10-13, 2012 at the Grand Wailea, Maui, Hawaii. The conference
will be preceded by technical workshops on Sunday, December 9, 2012.
The CDC is recognized as the premier scientific and engineering conference
dedicated to the advancement of the theory and practice of systems and control.
The CDC annually brings together an international community of researchers and
practitioners in the field of automatic control to discuss new research results,
perspectives on future developments, and innovative applications relevant to decision
making, automatic control, and related areas.
The 51st CDC will feature contributed and invited papers, as well as tutorial sessions
(upon invitation only) and workshops.

The 2012 IEEE Multi-Conference on Systems and Control (MSC 2012) will take
place in Dubrovnik Palace Hotel, Dubrovnik, Croatia, on October 3 – 5, 2012.
MSC 2012 includes two international conferences sponsored and promoted by
the IEEE Control Systems Society:
* The IEEE Conference on Control Applications (CCA)
* The IEEE International Symposium on Intelligent Control (ISIC)
SCOPE AND TOPICS
MSC 2012 areas of interest traditionally include a wide range of topics in
control systems, technology, and applications. This year, in addition to
such topics, we would like to address new and emerging research areas in
control, such as systems of systems, robotics, intelligent autonomous systems
and computational intelligence, architectures for intelligent control,
control inspired by systems biology, vision in control, and control theory
in psychology and sociology, as well as application of control theory in
economics, next generation healthcare and healthcare delivery. Given the
growing energy problems and demands, we would like to invite papers on
control applications in new energy resources, and in energy grid control.
In an increasingly networked world, communications, computing and control
systems merge – thus networked control systems and cloud computing in
control applications are also topics of special interest. We are also
looking for papers dealing with fuzzy discrete event systems, quantum
control and quantum feedback control. Other topics of interest include
marine control systems, automotive control systems, control of constrained
systems, and manufacturing systems control (planning and scheduling).

Modern complex large-scale dynamical systems exist in virtually every aspect
of science and engineering, and are associated with a wide variety of physical,
technological, environmental, and social phenomena, including aerospace, power,
communications, and network systems, to name just a few. This book develops a
general stability analysis and control design framework for nonlinear large-scale
interconnected dynamical systems, and presents the most complete treatment on
vector Lyapunov function methods, vector dissipativity theory, and decentralized
control architectures.
Large-scale dynamical systems are strongly interconnected and consist of inter-
acting subsystems exchanging matter, energy, or information with the environment.
The sheer size, or dimensionality, of these systems necessitates decentralized
analysis and control system synthesis methods for their analysis and design.
Written in a theorem-proof format with examples to illustrate new concepts, this
book addresses continuous-time, discrete-time, and hybrid large-scale systems. It

Reset Control Systems addresses the analysis for reset control treating both its
basic form which requires only that the state of the controller be reinitialized
to zero (the reset action) each time the tracking error crosses zero (the reset
condition), and some useful variations of the reset action (partial reset with
fixed or variable reset percentage) and of the reset condition (fixed or variable
reset band and anticipative reset). The issues regarding reset control – concepts
and motivation; analysis tools; and the application of design methodologies to
real-world examples – are given comprehensive coverage.
The text opens with an historical perspective which moves from the seminal work
of the Clegg integrator and Horowitz FORE to more recent approaches based on
impulsive/hybrid control systems and explains the motivation for reset compensation.
Preliminary material dealing with notation, basic definitions and results, and with
the definition of the control problem under study is also included. The focus then
turns to stability analysis for systems with and without time-delays using techniques
which account for time- and frequency-domain criteria; here the main results range
from reset-time-independent to reset-time-dependent for systems without time delay,
and from delay-independent to delay-dependent for systems with time delay. The final
section of the book is centered on control systems design and application. The PI+CI
compensator is detailed as are a proposed frequency domain approach using quantitative
feedback theory and ideas for design improvement. Design examples are given and the
uses of reset control for temperature control in a heat exchanger, for internet
teleoperation and for the control of solar collector fields are described to show
the reader the advantages of reset control in practice.
Academic researchers and graduate students working in control systems, especially
hybrid and impulsive systems, and industrial practitioners interested in innovative
applications of control will find the techniques put forward in Reset Control Systems
to be attractive both for their combination of efficacy and simplicity and for the
range of real-world systems for which they are relevant.

This book provides two systematic identification methodologies in terms of
using step test(s) and relay feedback experiment(s), respectively, and a series
of model-based control methods for single-input-single-output (SISO) processes,
cascade control processes, multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) processes, and
batch processes, based on the consecutive research results explored by the
authors in the past years.
A key feature of the main identification methods developed therein is to capture
the fundamental dynamic response characteristics (in the low frequency range) of
the process by deriving a low-order model of first-order-plus-time-delay (FOPDT)
or second-order-plus-time-delay (SOPDT), besides a few higher-order model
identification methods prescribed for those processes with specific model
structures and more describing parameters. Another important feature distinguished
from existing identification books is that, a time delay parameter is explicitly
included in such a low-order model structure for identification, since time delay
is ubiquitous in engineering practices.
Accordingly, the model-based control methods given in the sequel are developed
based on the robust control theory, thus allowing for unmodeled process dynamics
(in general of high frequencies) and nonlinearity. A common feature of these
control methods is that all controllers in the corresponding control schemes
are analytically derived by design formulae. Each of these formulae, intuitively
or essentially, has only a single adjustable parameter that can be monotonically
tuned to meet the best trade-off between the control performance and robust stability,
hence facilitating the control implementation in practical applications.

Fusion 2012 is the 15th International Conference on Information Fusion. It will
be held for the first time in the Asian continent in Singapore. The objective
of the conference is to provide a forum to discuss advances and applications
of fusion methodologies. The conference will feature keynote speeches, special

The organizing committee of MED'12 extends a cordial invitation to you to the
20th Mediterranean Conference on Control and Automation which will be held on

GENERAL INFORMATION
The Mediterranean Conference on Control and Automation is a series of meetings
that has been running since 1993, coordinated and supervised by the Mediterranean
Control Association, with MED'12 being the 20th conference of the series. The conference,
through its technical program, will provide a unique opportunity for the academic and
industrial community to address new challenges, share solutions and discuss future
research directions. A broad range of topics is proposed, following current trends
of combining control/systems theory with software/ communication technologies.
The sponsors of MED’12 are Mediterranean Control Association (MCA), Comité Español
de Automática (CEA) and Technical University of Catalonia (UPC). And the technical
co-sponsors are IEEE Control Systems Society and IEEE Robotics and Automation Society.
The Plenary speakers will be professors Mario Sznaier of Boston University, Sergio
Bittanti of Politecnico de Milano and Alicia Casals of Universitat Politècnica de
Catalunya.
The MED 2012 has established an award to recognise authors with superior quality paper
presented to this symposium. The Best Paper Award consists of a certificate and an
amount of 1000 euros. A separate committee firstly, will select the nominated papers
from the results of the review process of all submitted papers and secondly, will
evaluate the presentation of the nominated papers during the event, and the winner

Development of Globally Optimal Solutions to Simultaneous Localization and
Mapping for Robot Navigation
Project Summary
---------------
Robot navigation in unknown environments requires a robot to simultaneously
construct a map in real-time and localize itself within the map, particularly
in the absence of external location reference such as a global positioning
system. The project will develop in-depth understanding of the fundamental
structure and properties of nonlinearity involved in Simultaneous Localization
and Mapping (SLAM); efficient and reliable algorithm for solving very large
scale SLAM problems; and reliable real time monocular SLAM algorithms. This
will result in the development of robots that can reliably and continuously
navigate in unknown environments.
Research Environment
------------------
UTS Centre for Autonomous Systems (CAS-UTS) consists of 40 staff and students
working on various aspects of robotics, in particular in sensing, data fusion
and control. From 2003 - 2010, it was one of the three nodes of the ARC Centre
of Excellence for Autonomous System (CAS) with over 230 staff and research
students. The UTS team has played a major role within CAS, particularly with
theoretical breakthroughs in sensing and perception in unknown and unstructured
environments and applications of autonomous robots in infrastructure maintenance,
urban search and rescue, and port automation.
Funding for the UTS robotics team comes from both the Australian Research Council
and Industry. Since 2003, it attracted $10m in external funding for its research.
Applied research within the team is funded by grants from a range of industry
partners such as Roads and Traffic Authority of New South Wales, Australia;
Patrick Stevedores Holdings, Australia's largest operator of container terminals
and a leading logistics company; Pempek, a SME in the mining sector and Meat and
Livestock Australia.
The research team is located in a single integrated office and laboratory environment
specially refurbished with the support from UTS and Kirby Foundation, providing one
of the best research facilities for collaboration and cross-fertilization. Five
additional laboratories for work on urban search and rescue, assistive robotics,
outdoor navigation, robotic infrastructure maintenance and physical human robot
interaction are also available to the UTS team.

PostDoctoral position in Embedded Networked Systems

Remote Imaging of Community Ecology via Animal-borne Wireless Networks
Project Description: The University of Maryland at College Park (UMCP), the
National Geographic Society (NGS) and Princeton University are collaborating
on a four-year NSF-funded project to construct a wireless network of animal-borne
embedded devices that will be deployed and tested in a biologically relevant
application. The networked devices will provide not only geo-location data, but
also execute cooperative strategies that save battery-life by selectively recording
bandwidth-intensive audio and high-definition video footage of occurrences of animal
group behavior of interest.
An environmental protection agency of the Canadian government will use this system
to investigate the causes behind the heavy predation that is victimizing a species
of Caribou in their territory. Hence, the results and experience gained in this project
will guide the development of effective autonomous systems for the monitoring and
protection of endangered species. There is also the potential for using wide-reaching
media resources to disseminate the results of this project to a broad audience, which
will increase awareness for the protection of endangered species.
PostDoctoral Job description: The project’s team is searching for a PostDoctoral
researcher who will be responsible for the development, testing and performance
evaluation of the networked embedded devices. These will extend existing video-
recording devices (Crittercam) that have been developed by NGS. The new devices
will be equipped with low-power GPS localization, wireless communication and on-
board execution of distributed algorithms for data storage, streaming and processing,
as well as other functionalities such as battery management. The work will be
developed at the Remote Imaging laboratories, located in the headquarters of NGS
in Washington DC, and it will benefit from the guidance and mentorship of experienced
engineers.
The Postdoctoral researcher will interact with other team-members at the University
of Maryland and Princeton University. More specifically these teams will evaluate
and develop distributed algorithms (Maryland) and determine data to be collected
and develop biologically-relevant models (Princeton). The intellectual merit of
the work is in development of methods for hardware integration to build distributed
networks of embedded devices that are capable of executing algorithms, subject to
severe power and weight constraints.
The successful applicant should have a Ph.D. degree in Engineering, or related field,
and most of the following skills:
• Experience or willing to learn RF/microwave design, wireless mesh networks, software/
firmware integration, schematic design and layout.
• Hands on experience in hardware systems integration.

York University is delighted to announce a $100M transformative expansion that
will lead to the creation of the Lassonde School of Engineering. Supported by
a generous donation from Pierre Lassonde and by the Government of Ontario and
York University, this ambitious project builds on the successes of the present
School of Engineering, which currently offers fully accredited and innovative
programs in Computer Engineering, Geomatics Engineering and Space Engineering,
as well as a new program in Software Engineering (eng.yorku.ca). The planned
expansion will lead to new programs in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering,
Chemical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering.
This major initiative provides a unique opportunity for both senior and junior
faculty to help lead the creation of innovative teaching and research programs
that integrate the diverse areas of Engineering, Law, Business, Sciences and
Humanities, within the multidisciplinary environment of York University.
SPACE ENGINEERING: TWO POSITIONS
We seek outstanding candidates for an Assistant or Associate Professor position
in Space Engineering with a commitment to liaising between Space Engineering
and Mechanical Engineering. The ideal candidate would demonstrate substantial
experience in topics such as: heat transfer and thermodynamics; space materials;
smart composite materials for lightweight space structures; thermal and mechanical
coatings; space propulsion; spacecraft control; spacecraft systems and design;
multidisciplinary design optimization.
We seek outstanding candidates for an Assistant Professor position in Space
Engineering with expertise in areas including, but not limited to: space electronic
systems; space communications; spacecraft navigation and control; space
instrumentation; spacecraft/satellite design; solid state physics with
applications to space; space/planetary exploration; space environment;
ground testing.
GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS
Candidates must have a strong commitment to engineering research and the
profession, and be effective educators. Candidates must hold earned undergraduate
and PhD degrees in the relevant Engineering field, or a closely related discipline.
Successful candidates shall demonstrate commitment to the engineering profession
by being licensed as a Professional Engineer, or by becoming licensed soon after
appointment. Candidates must have the strategic skills and vision necessary to
advance the School of Engineering towards higher levels of excellence within a
rapidly evolving multi-disciplinary and high-technology environment. Candidates
at the Associate Professor rank must have international recognition in their
specific discipline(s) with a record of excellence in technical, academic and
professional achievements. Candidates at the Assistant Professor rank must have
a growing international research reputation as well as a strong interest in
teaching and state-of-the-art curriculum development. All successful candidates
must be eligible for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

The year 1953 saw the establishment of a new Zhejiang University of Technology in
Hangzhou, the picturesque historical and cultural city in China. The present university,
as a provincial key comprehensive university, can offer not only engineering courses,
but also a large range of disciplines. And with a national key laboratory and three
post-doctoral programs, the University is entitled to confer degrees of master, doctor,
MBA. In addition, it has been granted the right to recommend outstanding undergraduates
as candidates for graduate programs in other universities without entrance examinations
and the right to recruit international students as well as students from Hong Kong, Macao,
and Taiwan.
The university now consists of 3 campuses, covering a total area of over 213 hectares
