Tribute to Jan Willems - scholar and friend

Time and Place: Monday July 7, 2014, 15.30 - 20.00, Aula of the Academy building, University of Groningen.


On August 31, 2013, Jan C. Willems passed away. 

In order to commemorate his scientific legacy and friendship, and to honor his contributions to the Systems & Control scientific community, a memorial meeting will be organized in the Aula of the University of Groningen; the place where he acted as promotor for many of his PhD students, and where he held his inaugural speech and farewell lecture for the University of Groningen.


The memorial meeting will take place after an early ending of the regular MTNS2014 program on Monday July 7, and will be open to everybody.

The program of the meeting will consist of a number of invited talks by colleagues, who will highlight his contributions to the field and share personal memories.

3.1 Special Issues of Journals and Research Monograph in Honor of Professor Biswa Datta

Special Issues of Journals and Research Monograph in Honor of Professor Biswa Datta


A special issue on "Inverse Problems in Science and Industry" of the journal "Numerical Linear Algebra with Applications" (Vol. 20, 167-170, 2013) , has been dedicated to Biswa Nath Datta. The issue contains 17 papers, which address a variety of the theoretical issues, and applications, associated with inverse problems. The publication recognizes Biswa Datta's many significant contributions to linear algebra and control theory. This special issue was edited by Eric Chu, W.-W. Lin and Lothar Reichel.


A research monograph entitled "Numerical Linear Algebra in Signals, Systems and Control" (Lecture Notes in Electrical Engineering 80, Springer, 2011), was dedicated to Biswa Nath Datta. The monograph was edited by Paul Van Dooren, Shankar Bhattacharyya, Raymond Chan, Vadim Olshevsky and Aurobinda Routray. It contains contributions by some of the leading researchers in these areas which included several invited talks delivered at the International workshop under the same title held at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India in 2007. 

Datta was honored at a banquet ceremony organized by the local IEEE Chapter during the conference for "his numerous contributions in the area of numerical linear algebra with control and systems theory, and signal processing". The ceremony was presided by the then President of IEEE Chapter, IIT-Kharagpur. The speakers included, Rajendra Bhatia, the late Gene Golub, Volker Mehrmann, B. M. Mohan, and Paul Van Dooren. 


A special issue of the journal "Linear Algebra and its Applications" (Volume 434, Issue 7, April, 2011), was dedicated to Datta "in recognition of his contributions to Linear Algebra, his enthusiasm for linear algebra and its applications, and his efforts over the years to bring together researchers in Linear Algebra with scientists and engineers, who work on applications for which linear algebra is essential". It was noted there that "Biswa Datta's enthusiasm for Linear Algebra and its applications has been a source of inspiration for many colleagues and students". The editors of this issue were Richard Brualdi, Robert Plemmons, Lothar Reichel and Qiang Ye. This issue contained papers on theory, computations and applications of Linear Algebra, mostly based on some of invited and contributed talks given at the IMS Conference on "Linear Algebra, Numerical Linear Algebra and Applications", held at Northern Illinos University, August, 2011. Biswa was honored by distinguished linear algebraists in a banquet ceremony of this conference. The speakers included, Shankar Bhattacharyya, Richard Brualdi, James Nagy, Robert Plemmons, Hans Schneider, and Vadim Sokolov. The ceremony was presided by William Blair who was the Chairman of the Department of Mathematical Sciences of NIU at that time.

The book gives an introduction to networked control systems and describes new modeling paradigms, analysis methods for event-driven, digitally networked systems, and design methods for distributed estimation and control. Networked model predictive control is developed as a means to tolerate time delays and packet loss brought about by the communication network. In event-based control the traditional periodic sampling is replaced by state-dependent triggering schemes. Novel methods for multi-agent systems ensure complete or clustered synchrony of agents with identical or with individual dynamics.


The book includes numerous references to the most recent literature. Many methods are illustrated by numerical examples or experimental results.

As computers become ever-faster and communication bandwidth ever-cheaper, computing and communication capabilities will be embedded in all types of objects and structures in the physical environment. Applications with enormous societal impact and economic benefit will be created by harnessing these capabilities in time and across space. Such systems that bridge the cyber-world of computing and communications with the physical world are called cyber-physical systems.


Cyber-physical systems (CPS) are physical and engineered systems whose operations are monitored, coordinated, controlled and integrated by a computing and communication core. This intimate coupling between the cyber and physical will be manifested from the nano-world to large-scale, wide-area systems of systems. And at multiple time-scales. Cyber-physical systems will transform how we interact with the physical world just like the Internet transformed how we interact with one another.



The ICCPS 2014 conference will put specific emphasis on (but not limited to) the following overarching themes

* Transportation 

* Robotics 

* Energy 

Work focused on theory, algorithms, implementation and field deployments will be of great interest to the conference. Areas of interest to support these applications include (but not limited to): control, optimization, machine learning, verification, data mining, signal processing, information theory. By drawing on strategies from both computation and control, this field offers techniques applicable to both man-made, cyber-physical systems (ranging from mixed signal

HSCC has long been a leading, single-track conference for such rigorous, interdisciplinary approaches to dynamical systems with an emphasis on computational aspects. 8.1  PhD: Research Center on Automatic Control of Nancy, France

We are searching for an exceptional Ph.D. student with a strong background in dynamical systems and automatic control to work at Research Center on Automatic Control of Nancy (CRAN - Centre de Recherche en Automatique de Nancy).

This work will be developed in the framework of the "Computation Aware Control Systems" ANR project. Our strategies should not only be able to decide which control actions need to be taken, but also when the control tasks should be scheduled based on the availability of computing units and the state of the physical plant. The overall concept of our project is based on the fact that, in order to design computation aware control systems, a serious effort is needed to develop theoretical techniques in controller synthesis for hybrid systems.


Nowadays, the systems are seen as parts of networks. Each vertex of the network is influenced by the others but it has to be controlled with a minimum/local amount of knowledge on their behavior. This viewpoint opened a new research direction situated at the intersection of the graph theory, the information theory and the control theory. The networked systems are modeled as graphs and the control design is realized using spectral properties of the adjacency and Laplacian matrices associated to the graphs. The control of networked linear systems is now well developed and understood.


Recent techniques proposed for computation aware control design lead to dynamical systems with finite state jumps at some discrete instants of time. These systems are known in the literature either as impulsive or reset systems. The existing literature treats mostly linear reset systems. Two types of reset rules may be encountered, those defined by a time condition and those defined by a state one. The former type of reset systems is usually defined by a periodic or quasi-periodic reset rule. The later type assumes the stability of the system inside a given set and limits the evolution of the system to this set. The reset is done when the trajectory gets out of the stability set. The stability analysis as well as the stabilization of the both types is realized via Lyapunov techniques. Precisely, adequate (quasi-) quadratic Lyapunov functions are obtained by solving certain sets of linear matrix inequalities (LMI).


The aim of the PhD thesis is to analyze networked reset systems. Our focus will be on systems with a state dependent reset rule. The admissible evolution set will be described by some unilateral constraints and a complementarity relation will allow us to detect the reset instants. The reset rule at the impact with one or several constraints will be given by a kind of Newton restitution law. Doing so, we will be able to assure that the system evolves only inside the admissible domain. By using the complementarity framework, we expect to get further understanding of the stability and stabilization of reset systems. Since the complementarity formalism is not restricted to linear systems we also expect that using this tool we will be able to extend the analysis to nonlinear systems.

Modelling and Control of a Jet Engine Hydro Mechanical Unit (HMU)

Chalmers has a long tradition of research in Transportation Systems, with intensive collaboration with society and automotive industry. A large part of such research is performed at the Department of Signals and Systems (S2), where this post-doctoral position is announced. S2 is engaged in both fundamental and applied research, spanning a large variety of research areas including Automatic Control, Automation, Mechatronics, Biomedical Engineering, Communication Systems and Information Theory, Signal Processing and Antennas. Cross-disciplinary research is central and encouraged through projects across different groups within the Department.


Major responsibilities:

You will be involved mainly in research activities concerning driver modeling and state recognition. The main objective of the research is to formulate and online tune mathematical models of the driver, based on the onboard measurements available on a vehicle. The driver’s model have to be able to predict the driver’s steering and accelerating behavior, based on the onboard measurements of the vehicle state and information about the surrounding environment (obtained though, e.g., cameras, radars, laser scanners) and recognize the mode the driver is operating in, among a set of possible driving modes.


You will attend international conferences and meetings, where you will present your own work and establish useful contacts with other researchers. The position can commence immediately.


Your major responsibility as postdoc is to perform your own research in a research group. The position also includes teaching on undergraduate and master's levels as well as supervising master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent. The specific objectives include the developments of software packages to provide modules for inspection, process monitoring, and safety for welding and finishing processes and advanced robust sensing technologies for improved welding and finishing process in uncertain environments.


This project is one of the eight working packages of the industrial robotics project. Prospective candidates applying for this position (minimum of 1 year and maximum 3 years) will join a team working with researchers from other leading research agencies in Singapore on research and development of intelligent sensing and perception technologies and systems using affordable sensors for industrial robotic welding and finishing, including the algorithm design and implementation, system integration and testing on the industrial robotic platform, etc. In particular,

Project full title: "Integrated Real-time Feedback Control and post-processing for image Restoration"


Research Project Abstract:

To integrate the advantages of the real-time AO (Adaptive Optics) correction with those of post-processing smoothing methods - while overcoming their drawbacks - a new unified framework is developed in this project to retrieve in real-time closed-loop experiments the information necessary to perform high performance image smoothing in the post-processing mode. In the real-time mode system identification and feedback control of multidimensional systems are used to acquire the temporal and spatial dynamics of the wavefront aberration under dedicated experiments optimizing all degrees of freedom of the deformable optics device. This dynamic model is used in the post-processing mode to achieve image restoration at the diffraction limit and beyond. The integrated approach will also help to remove the barrier of transferring the AO technology from the lab to the end-user by exploiting dynamic feedback in making better cost-effective high-resolution instrument designs.


To enable to deal with the dimensionality of the image restoration problem, even when using compressed sensed CCD images (order 10K to 100K channels) and/or the large number of actuators (200 by 200 array as in the forthcoming extreme AO for the E-ELT) and the spatial-temporal dynamics of the wavefront aberration require the development of new distributed identification and control design methods that have off-line linear computational complexity or better and allow multi-core CPU/GPU’s processing in real-time at kHz rate.


This research goal is pursued in this project in 4 integrated, multi-disciplinary research objectives:


Objective 1: System identification of the spatial-temporal wavefront aberration dynamics.

(PhD Position – 4 years – starting beginning 2014) Subspace identification methods will be developed to identify large scale spatial-temporal dynamical models for the complete imaging plant.


Objective 2: Experiment Design and Wavefront Reconstruction. 

(PhD Position – 4 years starting beginning 2014) A complicating factor in the image restoration is that the wavefront aberration cannot be directly measured. A calibration step to determine the mapping between the image sensor output and the wavefront is necessary to specify the cost function to be optimized in closed loop control.


Objective 3: Distributed Robust Feedback Control and Updating. 

(Postdoctoral Research fellows – 3 years – staring beginning 2015 and PhD Position – 4 years – starting beginning 2015) For the linear case of using a pupil plane sensor the challenge is to develop a distributed H2 optimal control solution for the case of heterogeneous distributed systems in order to treat the spatially varying dynamics. Fundamental new research on robust distributed control for 2D heterogenous systems defined on a finite support (finite field of view) is necessary for LTI and Wiener systems.


Objective 4: High Performance and low cost Adaptive Optics and integral validation.

(Postdoctoral Research fellows – 3 years – staring beginning 2015 and PhD Position – 4 years – starting beginning 2015) In this step the real-time AO and super-resolution post processing methods are integrated to diffraction limited image restoration or beyond. To validate both the real-time correction and the post-processing two demonstrators will be developed.

Minimum Qualifications Required:

DEIMOS Space is selecting an engineer to be integrated in the Control Competence Centre of the Flight Systems Business Unit to support and lead activities in the area of GNC and specifically advanced control. The work of the Control Competence Centre is oriented to technology research applied to the development and validation of Control systems for the space and aeronautical fields.


The following types of responsibilities are envisioned: Design and implementation of control and FDIR/HMS systems for space/aeronautical vehicles; Development of control and FDIR/HMS engineering tools, including new design/validation methods; Validation of control and FDIR/HMS systems; Involvement in the design and validation of complete GNC systems.


Candidates should have: a solid theoretical background in control and/or FDIR; Practical experience in aeronautical/aerospace control; Master of at least one modern control/FDIR/estimation technique; Excellent knowledge of Matlab/Simulink.
